Grupo TRAGSA works on protecting the oceans
  • World Oceans Day, June 8th, recalls its activities for their preservation

Since 2009, every June 8th Millions of persons celebrate the World Oceans Day with the purpose of highlighting the key role which they play in our lives and the different ways in which they can be protected. Oceans contribute to regulating the climate and the weather, and they supply oxygen and food, as well as providing other beneficial effects for the Environment and for Society and the Economy in general.

The theme chosen for this year by the United Nations is 'Healthy Oceans, healthy Planet”, with which it is sought to carry out a special effort for stopping plastic pollution, one of the biggest threats for oceans, since they degrade very slowly and pollute rivers for a very long time.

Committed with the preservation of seas and oceans

For years, Grupo TRAGSA has shown a sound commitment with the preservation of seas and oceans. Among all the activities and projects which it is developing stand out its support to Spain’s Sea Strategies from the Ministry for Agriculture, Food, and the Environment (MAGRAMA).

Organized in five consecutive stages, they constitute the planning tool for the marine environment and, through their preparation and implementation, it is sought to achieve a good environmental situation for the marine environment by the year 2020.

Currently, work is taking place in the last stage, which involves the setup and implementation of the programs with the measures adopted.

Furthermore the MAGRAMA, with the support of Grupo TRAGSA, is promoting a number of meetings for making known the Sea Strategies and their importance as a tool for protecting the marine environment.

Within this framework for action five divulgation workshops have been organized aimed at the Administrations with jurisdiction, local agents, experts, sea users, environmental associations, fishers, etc. These workshops are being given in each of the Spanish sea demarcations applying the following programming:

  • Canary Islands sea demarcation: Tenerife, May 31st, 2016 (Centro Oceanográfico de Canarias (IEO), Santa Cruz de Tenerife)
  • North-Atlantic sea demarcation: Vigo, June 30th, 2016 (Centro de Interpretación del PN de las Islas Atlánticas de Galicia)
  • South-Atlantic sea demarcation: Cádiz, July 14th, 2016 (CEIMAR, Universidad de Cádiz)
  • Sea demarcation for the Straits and Alborán: Malaga, September 15th, 2016 (Aula del Mar de Málaga)
