MERCASA and the Mercas show their commitment with the Food Banks
In 2015, the collaboration between MERCASA, the Mercas Network and the Food Banks has continued, as show the numerous activities carried out with the goal of collecting fresh food for the most disadvantaged groups in our Society.
The Mercas Network works everyday on two significant areas for reducing food waste:
With this, Mercas show their daily commitment, displaying their resources for providing room within their Food Units to Food Banks, with the goal of storing in them the products donated by companies which, as of today, already exceed of 400. In this way, the Food Banks occupy more than 10,000 square meters within the Mercas in order to carry out their food collecting activity.
Surface ceded for free
At Mercalicante, for instance, the surface ceded for free amounts to a 627 m2 surface, which entails the saving of 3,760 € per month for the Food Bank. In 2005 through this Merca, a total of 4,793 Tons of food products were distributed to 225 entities, reaching 46,000 beneficiaries. The figure was 56% higher than in the previous year.
Mercasturias allows the use for free of a 108 m2 surface, and managed, together with the Food Bank, 105,969 kg of food in 2015. For its part, Mercabarna achieved in 2015 to donate 978 tons of fruit and vegetables, which entails a 66.3% increase on the previous year.
At the same time, this Merca has carried out works for enlarging the storage space which it allows to use for free to the Food Bank, thus having available more room for carrying out in a more comfortable and efficient way the recollection and classification of the fresh food.
Mercacórdoba allows the use of a 250 m2 surface to the Food Bank, on which this managed 2,202,000 kg of food in 2015. And in Mercagranada, of the 4,799 tons managed by the Food Bank, 166 tons came from the contributions made by the wholesalers of the Food Unit on a 540m2 surface granted for that purpose. Besides, this Merca carries out a number of events and activities in the media.
For its part, Mercalaspalmas, gives free a 920m2 surface, and in 2015 promoted, together with the Food Bank the management of 2,557 tons of food, of which 112 tons were fruit and vegetables supplied by 15 wholesalers. Wholesalers in Mercamálaga supplied in 2015 to the Food Bank 670 tons of fruit and vegetables through a 180 m2 platform.
At Mercapalma the amount of food contributed in 2015 to the Food Bank reached 1,114 tons, of which around 30% was supplied by wholesalers from the Unit Food.
From the Mercasalamanca’s facilities, the Food Bank handled 2,892 tons of food; 1,536 tons in Mercatenerife; and 2,143 tons in Mercasevilla. In the case of this Food Unit, wholesalers supplied a total of 357 tons of the total.
In 2015, Mercazaragoza was actively engaged in the solidarity program developed by the city council called “Zaragoza redistribuye”, in which also collaborated the Food Bank and intended to supply food to the most disfavored social groups.
MERCASA and Grupo SEPI
MERCASA belongs to Grupo SEPI, a corporate holding which includes a total of 16 state-owned companies in which it has direct, majority shareholding participations, with a workforce of around 73,000 professionals in 2014; the Spanish state-owned television and radio corporation, Corporación Radiotelevisión Española, which is attached to SEPI, and one public foundation. Equally, SEPI has direct minority shareholdings in a further ten companies, and indirect shareholdings in more than one hundred companies.
