Press release AGENCIA EFE

More than fifty images coming from the graphical archive of the news agency AGENCIA EFE about the places in which Miguel de Cervantes lived and about Don Quixote’s representations are part of the virtual exhibition 'Las Rutas de Cervantes' (Cervantes’ routes) which Google has made available to its users.

In this unprecedented online project, which has been developed by Google Cultural Institute with the support of the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports took part eight institutions which, whit h their funds also wished to contribute to the celebration of the 400th anniversary of Cervantes.

Agencia EFE has made this supplying to the initiative – which was presented today by the acting Minister of Education, Culture and Sports, Mr. Íñigo Méndez de Vigo – a selection of more than fifty photographs about Cervantes and the Quixote coming from its graphical archive, which treasures more than 18 Million photographs.

The images were taken by photographers from the news agency since the 1930s and they make a review, through four main chapters, Cervantes’ life, the Quixote route, the Quixote and his representations, and Cervantes in the world.

Each of these sections, with unique images, which sometimes had never been shown before, show instants in the author’s life, as well as places and personages which appear in his work.

Images from the house in which the writer was born in Alcalá de Henares (Madrid), and of landscapes and sites which can be identified with Don Quixote, as well as the way he has been shown in the cinema, in theater and on monuments, in Spain and in the world.

A special mention must be made, due to its historical value, to the photographs and glass plates which, dated on the 1930s, are included within this virtual catalogue.

Five years after the setup of the 'Google Cultural Institute', in 2015 AGENCIA EFE concluded an agreement for cooperating with this project including in it part of its photographic collections, which can be obtained by any user who so wishes through internet.

The participation in the 'Las Rutas de Cervantes' joins previous ones, such as 'Los héroes del deporte español', 'Madrid durante la Guerra Civil', 'La última fase de la vida de Salvador Dalí', and '23-F: El intento de golpe de Estado en España'.
