The General Meeting of shareholders of DEFEX resolves to appoint Mr. Juan Carlos Villamía Ugarte as the Company’s new Chairman
The General Meeting of shareholders of the company DEFEX, which took place on April 30th, resolved to appoint Mr. Juan Carlos Villamía as the Company’s new Chairman, with effect from May 1st. Previously, the Board of Directors of the state-owned industrial holding company Sociedad Estatal de Participaciones Industriales (SEPI) had already resolved to propose Mr. Villamía Ugarte to replace Mr. Fernando Aguilar Viyuela, who recently took the decision to return to the private sector.
A graduate on Topographic Engineering by the Universidad Politécnica of Madrid, Mr. Juan Carlos Villamía holds the position of Lieutenant General in the Spanish Army. He studied in the General Military Academy at Saragossa, on which he graduated as lieutenant in the Engineers Corps, and later he held a number of commanding positions linked to that Corps.
After making the course for the Army Staff, he has held different positions in the Ministry of Defense, among them, that of military advisor in the Bureau of the Minister for Defense, Chief of the Staff for the Transmissions Command, Head of the Staff for the Secretary-General for Defense Policy, Chief of the Armed Forces High School, and when he already held the position of Lieutenant General, General Head for Defense Policy, position which he held from 2009 to 2012.
Outside Spain, he has participated in several international missions, such as NATO’s SFOR, in Mostar, and he has been a member of a number of working groups at international institutions, basically NATO and the EU. He also participated - from 2001 to 2004 – as the Spanish representative and joint-chairman of the Military Group at the European Corps and at the European Rapid Operational Force (Eurofor). In 2013 he was appointed defense advisor in Spain’s Standing Mission at the Organization of American States (OAS) and advisor for Hemispheric Security Issues, and he was also a permanent delegate observer of Spain before the Inter-American Defense Board, positions which he held until his appointment as DEFEX’s Chairman.
DEFEX - Grupo SEPI
DEFEX is a state-owned company which provides support to the Spanish industry, covering its needs for promotion and export of goods and services on international markets; to that end it makes use of a commercial network which is present in more than 30 countries.
DEFEX belongs to Grupo SEPI, a corporate holding which includes a total of 16 state-owned companies in which it has direct, majority shareholding participations, with a final workforce of more than 74,000 professionals in 2013; the Spanish state-owned television and radio corporation, Corporación Radiotelevisión Española, which is attached to SEPI, and one public foundation. Equally, SEPI has direct minority shareholdings in a further ten companies, and indirect shareholdings in more than one hundred companies.
