CORREOS inaugurates a new forest at the Parc Natural in the Península de LLevant (Mallorca)
CORREOS’ Chairperson, Mr. Javier Cuesta, the Director-General for the Natural Environment, Ms. Neus Lliteras, and the General-Director of Ardilla Connecting Life, Mr. Ricardo Fraile inaugurated today at 12:30 am a new CORREOS’ forest at the public estate of Sa Duaia in Artà. During the inauguration ceremony an indicative panel of the forest was unveiled, and the symbolic planting of the last tree of this CORREOS’ forest took place, thus putting an end to the reforestation effort.
This reforestation, which was carried out in 2013 and 2014, involved two stages: in the first 3,100 trees were planted by a team led by the NGO Ardilla Connecting Life, while the second part was performed by 42 volunteer workers from CORREOS, which are part of the Solidarity teams, who on December 15th, 2013 planted the 400 trees required for completing this “CORREOS forest”.
This new forest is located at the public owned mountain of Sa Duaia, in the municipality of Artà, a surface which was seriously affected by the Cala Torta forest fire in the summer of 2013, and which is owned by the IBANAT (Institut Balear de la Natura).
The second CORREOS forest in the Balearic Islands
During the last two years CORREOS has reforested two woodlands in the Balearic Islands. In this sense, the postal company also financed at Eivissa the planting of more than 300 savins from Ibiza, in the fire-affected areas of Benirras, Sant Joan de Labritja and Morna. In this activity also took part the IBANAT, the NGO Ardilla Connecting Life, and the students from the high school institute IES Xarc de Santa Eulalia, who are enrolled in the agro and forestry syllabus, and who were in charge of the setup of this new CORREOS forest.
With these initiatives it is promoted the so-called “Mediterranean Green Belt”, which has as its goal the restoration of deforested areas along the Mediterranean Coast in order to fight against desert encroachment and climate change.
During the last fourteen years, CORREOS, through the commercialization of the envelopes, boxes, and packaging from the “Green Line” finances the planting of forests all over Spain. Besides the fact that these packaging are made up from completely recyclable paper and cardboard, CORREOS donates a share of the income obtained from them to financing reforestation projects on different locations in Spain.
Since this Program began, 64,219 trees have been planted, covering 156 Hectares all over Spain, giving place to a total of 12 CORREOS forests. The commitment undertook by the postal company with the environment won it in 2013 the World Mail Awards, the “Oscars” of the state-owned postal operators, in the SCR, for the program “Línea Verde – Bosques de CORREOS” (Green Line – CORREOS forests).
Correos belongs to Grupo SEPI, a corporate holding which includes a total of 16 state-owned companies in which it has a direct, majority shareholding participation, with more than 74,000 professionals in 2013, and to which is attached the state-owned radio-and-television corporation, as well as one public foundation. Besides, it has direct minority shareholding participations in a further 9 companies, and indirect ones in more than 100 companies.
Correos is the biggest company in Spain, both in terms of its presence and territorial scope, with around 10,000 points for gaining access to its services. It distributes over 4,000 Million shipments per year, and it reaches daily 28 Million households, companies and institutions. It has a human team made up by about 53,000 professionals who work to provide comprehensive solutions and a wide range of high-quality products adapted to the different customer categories, both in packaging and direct marketing, and in postal services based on the new technologies and financial services.
