CORREOS presents a new postmark dedicated to the ship Hespérides
CORREOS’ Chairman, Mr. Javier Cuesta Nuin, has delivered today a new postmark to the Admiral in charge of Sea Action, Mr. Salvador Delgado Moreno. This postmark reproduces the image of the oceanographic research ship Hespérides. The presentation ceremony was also attended by a delegation of managers from the postal company, the Commander of the Sea Action units at Cartagena, Mr. Juan Escrigas Rodríguez, and the Chief of Staff of the Sea Action Forces, Mr. Miguel Ángel Izquierdo de la Iglesia.
CORREOS already issued on January 2012 a stamp dedicated to the series “Biodiversity and Oceanography” in honor of the Malaspina expedition, which made a seven-month long tour around the world aboard the ship “Hespérides”, of the Spanish Navy. In the project took part 250 researchers from 19 Spanish institutions – such as the Navy Royal Astronomic Observatory, the Naval Museum, and the Navy Hydrographic Institute – carrying out tests in 350 oceanographic stations, in depths of up to 5,000-meters, collecting thousands of air, water and plankton samples.
That stamp, which was designed by the Jesús Sánchez studio, showed a seascape made up by the sky and the sea, crossed by the ship Hespéride, and on the water is reflected the image of the corvette Atrevida, which escorted the first expedition led by Malaspina, while on one of the stamp’s angles one glass container symbolizes the expedition’s important scientific content.
The Oceanographic Research Ship (BIO) Hespérides is the only Spanish ship designed for carrying out a multidisciplinary scientific research in the planet’s seas and oceans, including the Arctic and the Antarctic Oceans, during the boreal and the austral summers, respectively. Actually, it is the first Spanish ship to carry out scientific campaigns on both glacial oceans, a landmark which took place in the summer 2007 when, under the sponsorship of the UN, took place the International Polar Year and the first Arctic Campaign was carried out.
The ship’s main activity is focused on the austral summers, when it carries out Scientific Campaigns on the Antarctic, occasionally collaborating in the logistical and personnel support to the Spanish Antarctic Bases (BAE) 'Juan Carlos I' and 'Gabriel de Castilla', as well as in the research projects programmed by them. The home port of this ship, which was especially designed for scientific tasks, is the Cartagena Military Arsenal.
Postmark dedicated to three submarines
The postmarks dedicated to the submarines “Galerna”, “Mistral”, and “Tramontana” were put into circulation last July with the goal of recalling the old postmarks which CORREOS used in the past for authorizing the shipment of correspondence aboard the submarines.
In the ceremony for the delivery of these postmarks, which took place at the Submarines Base which the Spanish Navy has at Cartagena, took part the Admiral Chief of the Arsenal of Cartagena, Mr. Fernando Zumalacárregui, and the Commander of the Submarine Fleet, Mr. José Sierra.
In 2014, CORREOS dedicated a stamp to the inventor of the submarine, Mr. Isaac Peral, who also commemorated the 125 Anniversary of the Launching of the Peral Submarine. Besides the three postmarks dedicated to the Spanish Navy’s three submarines, during this year will take place also in Cadiz the presentation of another postmark dedicated to the training ship Juan Sebastián Elcano.
Cartagena in CORREOS’ stamps
Besides the above mentioned stamp, Cartagena has also been featured on other stamps, such as the one dedicated to the Cabo de Palos Lighthouse in 2007, within the series dedicated to the Spanish lighthouses. Before that, on October 15th, 1986 a stamp was dedicated to Saint Isidoro of Seville, who came from Cartagena. The writer, poetess, and schoolteacher, Ms. Carmen Conde, who was also born at Cartagena, also shared a stamp with the writer from Valladolid, Ms. Rosa Chacel in 2007.
Another internationally known writer and who hails from this land, Mr. Arturo Pérez Reverte, received the homage of Spanish Philately through his fictional character Capitán Alatriste in two stamps which appeared as a result of the World Youth Philatelic Exhibition Spain 2002, which took place in Santander.
In this same line, the Undersecretary of Public Works, Mr. Mario Garcés, also presented last May a stamp dedicated to the Cante International Festival of the Minas de la Unión, which has diffused the city of Cartagena and flamenco singing all over the world through the letters.
