The favorite Jartúm won the Great spring Handicap
A public holiday in Spain today Thursday May 1st and at the HIPÓDROMO DE LA ZARZUELA has taken place the eleventh spring race meeting, in which five races have been contested. Two thousand five hundred persons gathered this evening, enjoying a very pleasant temperature.
At the Great spring handicap won the favorite, Jartum, trained by José Carlos Cerqueira. The horse from the stable Cuadra Tartufo achieved his first and well deserved victory after going in the middle of the pack all race long, until at the start of the home straight his jockey Vaclav Janaček began to demand from him a special effort, until he got beside She Rules, which headed the pack from the start, and the last 400 meters they held a close fight until he managed to win the gold at the finish line itself. More than two lengths behind arrived Tafadhali; this was the bet with the best payout in the evening (4 – 16 – 7), as for each Euro wagered 1,485.10 Euros were paid.A new generation of thoroughbreds had their debut at the Premio Primer Paso (First Step) in the first race, which was won by the filly from the stable Cuadra Nortenha. Dikta del Mar, regardless of having a rather ordinary start, in which she positioned herself too much towards the outside lanes, although later she was able to take the middle lanes and progress until she achieved the victory in an authoritative way led by Marino Gomes.
Thiago Martins, her trainer, confirmed her precociousness and speed. She arrived almost two lengths ahead of Vamos España, and five from Delfmar.
Premio Nouvel An of the third race was a very fast race from the starting gates. Andalucía took the head of the pack and at the beginning of the straight sprinted forcefully and it seemed that she was going to win, but Ghost Rules, on the middle of the track reached her quickly and easily won, by more than eight and a half lengths. The filly from the stable Cuadra Martull, trained by Ana Ímaz and rode by José Luis Martínez, crossed alone the finish line, making a very good impression on everybody. Kiriko arrived third.
The other two races which completed the program, the Premio Arizabalo of the second race and Premio Carlos Arniches of the fourth, had as their winners Altamir One and Agustina.
Altamir One, from the stable Cuadra Salvador Márquez, rode by the veteran gentleman Marcos Carmena and trained by Bárbara Valenti, and which had a bad start, gave us a beautiful arrival in a close fight with the clear favorite, Lince, which ended just one head behind the winner. Del Cossa completed the three first classified, almost three lengths behind.
In the fourth race, which is the basis of the Lototurf, the winner was no. 2 Agustina. Oscar Ortiz de Urbina made a strong sprint on the outer lanes and won convincingly and easily for the stable Cuadra Paganini and for the trainer Teo Callejo. He finished four and a half lengths ahead of Cudón and Avon Ferry, who arrived very close.
The horse racetracks’ takings this evening amounted to 76,215 Euros. The winning combination for the Quíntuple Plus for today Sunday May 1st is made up by the following numbers: 3 – 3 – 2 – 2 – 4 – 16.
Bear in mind that next Sunday May 4th there will be a new race meeting from 4:30 pm at the Hipódromo de La Zarzuela. The main contest will be the fifth race, the Premio Comunidad de Madrid, reserved to three-year old fillies.
