Horse racing from Hipódromo returns to Paseo de la Castellana 80 years later
Next Sunday May 11th, HIPÓDROMO DE LA ZARZUELA, with the support of the town council will take horse racing from its habitual place and will get it closer to the general public, in an unprecedented event in which the people from Madrid will see galloping thoroughbreds from the Hipódromo on the middle of Paseo de la Castellana during the celebration of the Halcón Viajes Madrid Urban Turf. Ms. Faina Zurita, Chairperson of Hipódromo de La Zarzuela observed on the presentation that “we are proud of our horse racetracks and that is why we take it to the street. This race will be a way for showing what happens at HZ each Sunday”.
With this event it is intended to pay homage to the Spanish Turf, returning to the place on which stood the horse racing facilities from 1873 to 1933, located between the current ministerial buildings of Nuevos Ministerios and the football stadium of Santiago Bernabéu, and also showing the beauty and the emotion of the spectacle which is experienced alive every Sunday at the emblematic facility of La Zarzuela.
Besides, this will be the first initiative of the Open HZ plan which the capital’s horse racetracks will get started from May for offering the people from Madrid a renewed and ambitious leisure offer, with such proposals as concerts, exhibits, cars and motorbikes fairs, and events as the craft beer fair. Ms. Zurita added that “this event is just the starting signal of all that which the people from Madrid will be able to enjoy at the Hipódromo de La Zarzuela from May. Besides horse races we have a musical, cultural and gastronomic program which will leave nobody indifferent. The horse racetrack is fashionable again”.
An unprecedented technical display
The event will begin at 11:00 am at the open area of the football stadium of Santiago Bernabéu, where four races will take place, each with the participation of three horses.
The last of the races is programmed to take place at 01:00 pm, and the program will close at 02:00 pm with an equestrian exhibit by the stable la Yeguada de la Cartuja, the most important Andalusian horse reservoir in the world.

The event is sponsored by Halcón Viajes, the travel agencies network from the tourist group Globalia, whose President, Mr. Juan José Hidalgo thinks that this initiative constitutes “playful and enjoyable event which adds one more attraction to the many ones which Madrid offers”.
