New developments in R & D for tobacco cultivation in Extremadura
The enterprise Compañía Española de Tabaco en Rama S. A. (CETARSA) has presented this week a number of works carried out by the Farm Production and R&D Department with the aim of improving the quality and the production of the tobacco cultivation. The ceremony took place on May 5th, within the International Raw-Tobacco Organization (OITAB), and at the request of the State-owned enterprise. During this meeting, in which were present the representatives of this industry and the processing industry, information was provided about the results of the trials made by this Department during the 2008 crop, as well as the innovations which are intended for the 2009 crop.
During the presentation, CETARSA made public new ways for combating the diseases which attack the crop. As a result of the prohibition by the European Union to use the dichloropropene (one of the most successful methods for combating the nematoda which attack tobacco production), the Enterprise has designed a plan of trials aimed at replacing the above active material, taking as its replacement the use of biological products, which respect the Environment and which are not harmful for the persons.
The meeting also succeeded in making it known the genetic improvement which CETARSA is carrying out through an agreement signed with the Ministry of the Environment and Agriculture. Through this agreement a number of varieties of the Virginia and the Burley tobacco are being obtained, which present resistance to the most common pests in the cultivation areas, among which is the resistance to the nematoda.
CETARSA also made it known a trial for producing ecological tobacco, introducing new cultivation techniques, with the goal of producing a more healthy product, one which is more beneficial for the Environment and the biodiversity characteristic of the farming lands. This plan of trials takes place within the framework of the EU norms, aimed at the reduction of the environmental impact of farming production.
Within the framework of the OITAB and in order to facilitate to the industry the access to these results, CETARSA has proposed to carry out programmed visits to the trials which are being made, as well as providing information about the technical advances which might take place.
