INFORMATION ABOUT MERCASA

The Empresa Nacional Mercasa has been working for over 35 years on the modernization of the distribution structures. Its main activity framework is that of guaranteeing from an institutional standpoint, the distribution system of basic articles for the supply of towns. To that end, Mercasa develops two action lines:

  • Organizational: oriented to the permanent reorganization of the foodstuffs' distribution channels and their adaptation to the consumer's needs.
  • Institutional: as a tool of the Government's policy on the supply and consume of foodstuffs.
  • The country-wide network of the wholesale trade is made up of 22 MERCAS in operation and one, MERCALGECIRAS, whose project is underway. Currently, the percentage by channels of the consume market in Spain is as follows: fresh fruits and vegetables: 65% (80% with ZAC); fish: 55% (65% with ZAC); slaughterhouses and meat processing centers: 20%. The number of buyers who attend these centers each year is estimated at 16 million.

Besides, the wholesale trade includes Zonas de Actividades Complementarias (ZAC or Areas for Complementary Activities) and spaces for producers for the direct commercialization of their products.

On the area of the retailer trade, Mercasa collaborates with the city-councils on the recuperation of the markets' architectonical heritage, trough agreements signed with the Ministry for Public Works and with the FEMP (the Spanish Federation of City-Councils and Provinces).

Mercasa periodically takes part in campaigns for the promotion and orientation of the consume of foodstuffs, in collaboration with the Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Alimentation, with associations and with sector organizations, with public and private institutions, and by initiatives of the European Union.

The company's international activity is focused on subcontracting with specialized consulting firms and in the creation of consortia with Spanish companies which have infrastructures in other countries for promoting Mercasas' service offer.

Activity of the company in yaer 2009:

The main activities carried out in the 23 wholesaler Food Units (MERCAs) in which MERCASA participates, have consisted in maintaining the ongoing enlargement of Mercamadrid, the start of operations of Mercasalamanca on its new site, and the modernization of the abattoir of Mercabarna, Mercavalencia and Mercazaragoza.

Regarding the 11 commercial centers which are managed by MERCASA, it is worthwhile to highlight the refurbishment work carried out in new facilities, and the inclusion of a new retail market in the facility in Lanzarote, as well as the modernization work carried out in the facilities Getafe-3 and Leganés in Madrid.

In International Aid, MERCASA has increased its presence abroad through the MERCASAINCATEMA Consulting S.R.L. consortium, with a larger development of the Project for a New Food Unit in Luanda (Angola). Besides, it has continued with the work in two new retail markets in Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic), and it has performed promotion activities in Panamá and aid and work management for municipal markets in Uruguay and Algeria.

In the Spanish market, MERCASA has carried out the feasibility studies for retail markets in the towns of Mérida (Badajoz), Pontedeume (La Coruña), and Igualada (Barcelona), and it has continued managing those of Burgos Sur, Barberá del Vallés, and Abrera; the latter two are located in the province of Barcelona. It also has carried out the project and the works management of the San Vicente de Paúl market in Saragossa, within the framework of the E Plan. Besides, it has organized the VI National-level Meeting of retail markets in Madrid, which takes place every two years.

In financial terms, the Group has recorded a 1.9 Million Euros operating income, below that recorded a year before as a result of the special revenues in 2008 which resulted from the start of the Luanda project. The income of the companies which consolidate through the application of the equity method amounted to 6.7 Million Euros; this figure reflects the negative impact of the extraordinary losses provoked by Mercasevilla, and the non-recurring income earned in 2008. As a result of all of the above, the net income imputed to the dominant Company has amounted to 8.7 Million Euros.
