The Oceanographic Research Vessel Hesperides, built by IZAR, the forerunner of Navantia, was designed for the Spanish Armada in order to support the base Juan Carlos I in Antarctica and operate as a research vessel in all conditions. In 2003 it was modernized further reinforcing the hull against ice, replacing many of the systems and improving the livability of the ship. Video: NAVANTIA.
